Does Apple Pay Work in Korea? What Tourists Need to Know (2026)

Quick answer: Apple Pay can work at participating Korean merchants, but accepting a physical bank card does not guarantee contactless payment. Bring your physical card and a cash backup.

Check the terminal, not just the shop name

Look for an Apple Pay or contactless symbol and ask the cashier before ordering if your phone is your preferred payment method. Approval still depends on the terminal, your card network and your issuer. A chain's support does not guarantee that every branch or self-service kiosk will accept your overseas card.

We removed the previous claim that only 10% of merchants accept Apple Pay: we could not substantiate that nationwide percentage. A store-by-store check is more useful than an unsupported figure.

Set up your card before travelling

Check Apple's participating-issuer list for the country where your card was issued. Confirm overseas use and fees with your bank, add the supported card while you still have access to verification messages, and bring the physical version as a fallback. A Visa or Mastercard logo alone does not establish Apple Pay eligibility.

Tmoney on iPhone is a separate service

Tmoney launched in Apple Wallet in July 2025. The Mobile Tmoney app later added overseas-card funding; its July 2026 release notes list Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay and JCB. Check the current app for card eligibility, device requirements and the fee before loading money. Do not assume that funding directly in Apple Wallet has identical rules.

A Tmoney balance in your phone is different from presenting an ordinary bank card at a subway gate. For transit setup and alternatives, use our Tmoney guide.

What about Android and QR wallets?

Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet support depends on your device, account region, card issuer and the merchant. The old statement that Google Pay launched in Korea alongside Apple Pay in 2023 was unsupported and has been removed. Check your wallet provider's current supported-card information rather than assuming every overseas phone works like a Korean resident's setup.

Domestic payment-account registration and paying through an international partner wallet are different things. If you already use an overseas QR wallet, check its Korean merchant network in the app. Do not assume a Korean QR sticker accepts every foreign wallet.

A practical payment routine

For ATM and exchange planning, see How to pay in Korea. Wallet features and merchant coverage are checked by provider, not personally tested at every store.
