Illustration of payment options for a trip to Korea

A rejected payment does not always mean your card cannot be used in Korea. Separate a shop terminal problem from an online checkout restriction.

First, identify where the payment failed

Was this a physical shop, an ATM, an online booking or a phone app? These are different payment systems. A card that works at a hotel can still fail in an app, and a successful online purchase does not guarantee every terminal will accept the same card.

Keep the error message and time of the attempt. Ask the cashier whether the terminal supports your card network and whether inserting the physical card is possible. Do not keep repeating the transaction without checking whether a pending authorization appeared in your bank app.

At a shop or restaurant

Try your physical card if a phone-wallet payment fails. Check your available balance, card lock, expiry date and any overseas transaction controls in your issuer’s app. If the issuer blocked the payment, contact it through the number on the card or its official app.

If available, try a second card from a different issuer. Ask about another supported payment method before committing to a large purchase or sitting down for a meal. Keep the receipt and compare it with the final settled charge, since pending amounts can differ from completed transactions.

When an app or website rejects your card

Read the checkout’s requirements rather than assuming the card itself is broken. Korea Tourism Organization’s delivery-service guidance notes that some delivery apps require local phone verification and do not support foreign cards. This example should not be generalized to every Korean website.

Look for an official international checkout, another payment method or an in-person purchase. If none exists, choose a different provider. Do not send card details, passport scans or verification codes to an unofficial person offering to complete checkout for you.

Build a backup before you need it

At an ATM, check the supported card networks, withdrawal fee and any currency-conversion offer before accepting. Your issuer can also charge fees or apply withdrawal limits. Cancel if you cannot understand the charges; repeated attempts at different machines are not a guaranteed solution.

If the card is missing rather than declined

Lock a missing card through your bank’s official channel and report suspected unauthorized use promptly. Do not wait for a travel companion to finish sightseeing. For theft or immediate danger, use the steps in our safety guide.
