Compare the short-term Climate Card with pay-as-you-go travel using your actual days and routes, including the important airport exception.
The short-term options
Seoul lists 1-, 2-, 3-, 5- and 7-day passes at ₩5,000, ₩8,000, ₩10,000, ₩15,000 and ₩20,000 respectively. A physical card costs another ₩3,000. Validity begins on the recharge date, not a rolling 24-hour clock; advance charging is unavailable. Short-term passes exclude Ttareungi bicycles and Hangang Bus.
Check the route before the price
Coverage is limited to designated subway sections and Seoul-licensed buses. Use Seoul’s official coverage information for every journey. Intercity travel is outside this city pass. On AREX, eligible journeys can end at Incheon Airport terminals, but you cannot start there with the card. This does not cover AREX Express.
Work out your own break-even point
For a first purchase, a three-day pass costs ₩13,000 including the physical card. Suppose your planned eligible journeys would otherwise total ₩18,000: the example saving is ₩5,000. If those journeys total ₩9,000, pay-as-you-go is cheaper. These are arithmetic examples, not quotes for an itinerary.
Count journeys rather than attractions. Walking between a palace, a neighborhood and a café may produce only two paid journeys that day. Conversely, returning to your hotel between activities can increase your transport spending. Add separately any airport, regional or other excluded journey.
A practical purchase checklist
- Mark the days you will actually remain in Seoul. A Busan excursion does not pause a running pass.
- Check your hotel station and each destination against the coverage map.
- Choose a recharge date that gives useful travel time; late-evening activation may waste much of the first day.
- Confirm the card and product shown on the machine before paying. Ordinary Tmoney and the Climate Card are different products.
- Keep another payment option for travel outside the pass area.
Be careful with older 30-day advice
Seoul’s current notice says 30-day prepaid recharges ended after 31 August 2026. This article covers short-term visitor products. Do not follow an old monthly-card tutorial or assume a standard phone transit card automatically supports the Climate Card.
